The British people have decided to leave the European Union. In light of this outcome, the European People’s Party (EPP) President, Joseph Daul, and the EPP Group in the European Parliament Chairman, Manfred Weber, made the following statement: "We take note of the decision made by British voters. The EPP remains wholeheartedly committed to the European project and to the process of further integration with remaining 27 Member States. At the same time, we will defend the rights of EU citizens living in the UK and firmly oppose any attempts to interfere with the freedom of movement", said EPP President Joseph Daul. "We respect and regret the decision of the British voters. It causes major damage to both sides. But this was a British vote, not a European vote. People in the other states don't want to leave Europe. There are clear majorities in favour of the European project. Cooperation within Europe is a question of the ability for Europeans to determine their own way of life. It is our goal to effectively combat growing nationalism and populism”, said EPP Group Chairman Weber. “Respecting the democratic decision of the British voters also means that the exit negotiations should be swiftly concluded, within the two-year deadline, as defined in the Lisbon Treaty.  From our point of view, there cannot be any special treatment for United Kingdom. The British people have expressed their wish to leave the EU. Leave means leave. The times of cherry-picking are over”, said the EPP leaders. “Over the past 70 years, the European Union has safeguarded European freedom, peace and prosperity, and it will continue to do so. We must renew people’s enthusiasm towards the European project by delivering more tangible benefits to all our citizens. Together we will build a truly integrated single market which creates job opportunities. We will also better protect EU citizens by cooperating in the field of security. As President Juncker said during his campaign, the EU must be big on big things and small on small things in the future”, said President Daul. “Europe needs a time of reflection. We want a better and smarter Europe. We have to convince the people and find answers to the big challenges of our times such as security and migration. A strong Europe is a life insurance for all its Member States”, concluded the Chairman. Parallèlement, nous défendrons les droits des citoyens de l’UE vivant au Royaume-Uni et nous nous opposerons à toute tentative d’interférer avec la liberté de circulation, » a déclaré le Président du PPE Joseph Daul. « Nous respectons et nous regrettons la décision des électeurs britanniques. Elle provoque des dommages importants pour les deux parties. Mais c’est un vote britannique et non un vote européen. Les citoyens dans d’autres pays ne veulent pas quitter l’Europe. De claires majorités sont en faveur du projet européen. La coopération au sein de l’Europe, c’est donner la possibilité aux citoyens européens de choisir leur mode de vie. Notre objectif est de combattre efficacement le nationalisme et le populisme croissants,» a déclaré le Président du Groupe PPE Manfred Weber. « Respecter la décision démocratique des électeurs britanniques signifie aussi que les négociations de sortie doivent conclues rapidement, dans un délai de deux ans, tel que défini dans le Traité de Lisbonne. De notre point de vue, le Royaume-Uni ne peut bénéficier d’un traitement spécial. Les citoyens britanniques ont exprimé leur souhait de quitter l’UE. Partir veut dire partir. Les temps de la sélection « au cas par cas » sont révolus, » ont déclaré les leaders du PPE. « Au cours des 70 dernières années, l’Union européenne a sauvegardé la liberté, la paix et la prospérité européennes et continuera de le faire. Nous devons raviver l’enthousiasme de nos concitoyens pour le projet européen en leur apportant plus de résultats tangibles. Ensemble nous pouvons construire un marché unique véritablement intégré qui créera des nouvelles possibilités d’emploi. Nous devons aussi protéger mieux les citoyens de l’UE en coopérant dans le domaine de la sécurité. Comme l’a dit le Président Juncker durant sa campagne, l’EU doit être à l’avenir plus ambitieuse sur les grands enjeux et plus modeste pour les petits dossiers, » a déclaré le Président du PPE Joseph Daul, «L’Europe a besoin d’un temps de réflexion. Nous voulons une meilleure Europe, plus intelligente. Nous devons convaincre les citoyens et apporter des réponses aux grands enjeux de notre époque tels que la sécurité et la migration. Sie ist für beide Seiten ein großer Schaden. Es war aber eine britische Abstimmung und keine europaweite. Die Menschen in den anderen Ländern wollen die Europäische Union nicht verlassen. Es gibt klare Mehrheiten für das europäische Projekt. Die Zusammenarbeit in Europa ist eine Frage der Selbstbehauptung des Kontinents. Wir wollen gemeinsam den zunehmenden Nationalismus und Populismus bekämpfen“, sagte der EVP-Fraktionsvorsitzende Manfred Weber. „Die Austrittverhandlungen müssen, so wie vom Lissabon-Vertrag vorgesehen, innerhalb von zwei Jahren abgeschlossen werden. Dies gebietet der Respekt vor der demokratischen Entscheidung der britischen Wähler. Es kann keine Sonderbehandlung für Großbritannien geben. Das britische Volk will die EU verlassen. Austritt bedeutet Austritt, die Zeit der Rosinenpickerei ist vorbei“, erklärten Weber und Daul. „Während der vergangenen 70 Jahre war die Europäische Union ein Garant für Freiheit, Frieden und Wohlstand. Das wird sie auch weiterhin sein. Wir müssen die Begeisterung der Menschen für das europäische Projekt wieder entfachen, indem wir einen spürbaren Nutzen für unsere Bürger liefern. Gemeinsam werden wir einen wirklich integrierten Binnenmarkt mit neuen Jobmöglichkeiten aufbauen. Wir wollen zudem die EU-Bürger durch eine engere Zusammenarbeit in Sicherheitsfragen besser schützen. Die EU muss künftig groß bei großen und klein bei kleinen Dingen sein, wie es Kommissionspräsident Juncker während seiner Wahlkampagne formuliert hat“, unterstrich Joseph Daul. „Europa braucht jetzt Zeit zur Selbstreflexion. Wir wollen ein besseres und smarteres Europa. Wir müssen die Menschen überzeugen und Antworten auf die großen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit wie Sicherheit und Zuwanderung anbieten. Ein starkes Europa ist eine Lebensversicherung für all seine Mitgliedstaaten“, erklärte Manfred Weber.
