EPP Agriculture ministers met today in Brussels to prepare the upcoming Agriculture and Fisheries Council. The meeting was co-chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food. The ministers warmly welcomed Christophe HANSEN, the new Commissioner-designate for Agriculture and Food and exchanged views ahead of the upcoming European Parliament confirmation hearings. EPP Secretary General Thanasis BAKOLAS, who participated in the meeting, thanked the ministers for their leadership and highlighted the importance of agriculture and food security as an EPP priority policy during the upcoming institutional cycle. The participants exchanged views on the implementation of the 2021 – 2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and also engaged in a thorough discussion concerning the CAP priorities after 2027. They agreed that agriculture remains an area of strategic interest for the EU in order to guarantee food sovereignty and ensure food security. The simplification of the administrative burden, a decent income for farmers and the high quality of food consist the basis for a resilient and competitiveness of European agriculture. Participants also followed up on the process of changing the protection status of wolf in the Bern Convention and on the implementation of the deforestation law.
