EPP ECOFIN and EPSCO Ministers met today in Brussels, chaired by Karien van Gennip, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment of the Netherlands, Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Paschal Donohoe, President of the Eurogroup, to discuss on the agenda of the ECOFIN and EPSCO Councils. The Ministers welcomed the participation of Andrzej Domański, Minister of Finance from Poland, Domna Michailidou, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance of Greece and Sofia Zacharaki, Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Affairs of Greece. The 18 Ministers and Commissioners discussed the effects of social investments and reforms for the economy in their respective countries, focusing in particular on enhanced competitiveness, innovation and life-long learning as well as labour productivity in view of demographic challenges and inclusion of youth and vulnerable groups. They also exchanged views on the problems related to the scarcity of skilled labour as well as the potential of migration to cover the growing labour shortages in Europe. The participants praised the enlarged format of discussion initiated by the Belgian Presidency and Deputy Prime Minister Vincent van Peteghem, enabling better cooperation between Ministers of Labour and Finance as being beneficial for all.
