Members of the Political Assembly of the European People’s Party gathered in Brussels on 13-14 January. The meeting was chaired by EPP President Manfred WEBER and Secretary General Thanasis BAKOLAS.
President Weber opened the Political Assembly, describing EPP’s achievements in 2024, emphasising the importance of the trust the people of Europe have placed in the EPP to lead. He also stated that now is the time to focus on solutions to the pivotal challenges the Union is facing.
The Political Assembly featured a panel discussion "Tackling Disinformation and Foreign Interference: The EPP Response to the Current Challenges", chaired by EPP Vice-President Esteban Gonsalez PONS. The European Commission Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna VIRKKUNEN emphasised the main issues the EU must solve concerning disinformation and foreign interference, so as to safeguard democratic values. Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius KUBILIUS highlighted the need to view hybrid war tactics, such as disinformation and foreign interference, as a critical component of Russia's aggression strategy against Europe.
The Assembly discussed the 2025 EPP Statutory Congress which will take place in Valencia, Spain, on 29-30 April. The Mayor of Valencia Maria José CATALÁ delivered a brief presentation of the Spanish city. Delegates also approved the Congress and Voting Regulations.
