The Secretary General of the EPP Antonio López-Istúriz MEP, has reaffirmed EPP´s full support to Juan Guaidó as the Interim President of Venezuela and the National Assembly as the only democratic institution currently in the country. López-Istúriz has stated it during a meeting of EPP Working Group on Foreign Affairs that have had the president of Venezuela as a guest. There were representatives of EPP member parties from all over Europe at the meeting.
“The elections on December 6 are a sham of dictator Maduro to keep himself in power. We demand fair, just and transparent elections in the country”, stated López-Istúriz. EPP´s Secretary General has warmed about“ the terrible consequences, also for Europe and worldwide, of the increase of the authoritarian regimes in Latin America, so we need to speak loud and clear and act strategically. We must do it now. Each minute that goes by is a minute lost for democracy and freedom.” López-Istúriz has also supported the demand of President Juan Guaidó to extend the Constitutional mandate of the National Assembly and the celebration of a popular consultation organised for the 7-12 December, backed by the Constitution as an answer and rejection of the “electoral fraud of Maduro”.
“We cannot forget the serious humanitarian crisis that the country is suffering with more than 5 millions of displaced people and the constant violation of Human Rights as certified by a recent UN report. We should extend the sanctions to Maduro’s accomplices in the violations of Human Rights”. I ask High Representative Borrell and the European Socialists to continue with the international pressure on the regime as EPP already does. As President Juan Guaidó said, "we cannot accept living with a dictator in Venezuela,” added the MEP.
He also highlighted the constant support of the EPP for a free and democratic Venezuela.
