EPP Agriculture Ministers met today in Brussels to prepare for the upcoming Agriculture and Fisheries Council. EPP President Manfred WEBER welcomed the Ministers, emphasizing the need for greater unity in addressing the challenges ahead, before handing the floor to the Co-chairs: Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food.
The Ministers congratulated Poland on its EU Council Presidency program priorities, highlighting the importance of food security, the need for policies that strengthen the position of farmers within the value chain, and ensuring stable incomes while supporting the development of rural areas.
In light of the European Commission’s release of the "EU Vision for Agriculture and Food" on 19 February, the Ministers stressed the importance of simplifying existing CAP policies, stimulating generational renewal, and launching more concrete initiatives to support young farmers.
Finally, the Ministers discussed and exchanged views on the challenges posed by the Mercosur agreement, as well as the implications of EU enlargement and its potential impact on the agricultural sector.
