THURSDAY 8 DECEMBER, 2022 Five EPP Employment and Social Affairs Ministers gathered this morning in Brussels ahead of the EPSCO Council, in a meeting chaired by Karien van GENNIP, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment of the Netherlands. They shared their work and updates about EU and specific national measures and developments. Ministers took stock of the consequences of the war in Ukraine on Europe and their respective countries, especially in light of the flows of Ukrainian refugees as infrastructure in Ukraine are under attack. They discussed the way refugees are integrating society and the labour market, and can access basic needs such as education and housing. In particular, Ministers stressed the importance to have an honest conversation about how to handle the situation regarding asylum seekers in general, and what that means with respect to public support. In view of today’s discussions at the EPSCO Council, EPP Ministers exchanged informal views on the Directive on improving working conditions in platform work proposed by the European Commission. The discussion reflected a strong interest for the ongoing negotiations around this file, given its importance for many people across Europe and for the economy. Exchanges followed about the 2024 European elections. Specifically, Ministers agreed to discuss, in their next EPP EPSCO meeting early next year, the topics that they wish to share as priorities to be driven forward by the EPP, and as input for the next European Commission’s mandate. Finally, Chairwoman Minister VAN GENNIP congratulated Deputy Prime Minister JUREČKA and the Czech Presidency for having led and reached an agreement with the European Parliament on the main priorities of the EU Pay Transparency Directive. The law will introduce measures to ensure that women and men in the EU get equal pay for equal work.
