Ahead of the parliamentary elections taking place on 13 October in Poland, the European People’s Party (EPP) President Joseph DAUL wished the best of luck to EPP member parties Platforma Obywatelska (PO) and Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe (PSL):
“Throughout history, Poland has taught us courage, showed forward-thinking and instilled solidarity at home and abroad. Poland, a great nation, always knew how to steer its country in the right direction and I am proud to say that it is also thanks to Christian Democrats that Poland joined and became one of the most successful examples of the EU and NATO.
However, it is disheartening to see that democratic standards Poland fought hard for are now being eroded by the current ruling party. The recent reforms will deprive the citizens of stability and opportunities in the long term. They only serve the interest of the ruling political elite to maintain power. This Sunday’s election will be an important moment for the Polish people. They will have to choose between an independent rule of law or controlled judiciary, transparency or corruption, free media or propaganda. In this Sunday’s elections, every voice will make a difference and every vote will be decisive in deciding the country’s future.
Just as Christian Democrats had a clear vision of how to make Poland one of the most successful countries in the EU, I am convinced that they have the best programme and vision to deliver for their citizens.
PO and PSL have once again made their citizens a priority. They thought of how to improve their healthcare, invest in research to prevent cancer and offer better treatment through a concrete plan. Solidarity and commitment characterise PO and PSL’s policies; to offer better education, create more jobs, increase revenue and fight climate change. As true Christian Democrats, they are committed to investing in the generations of today and tomorrow and helping families in Poland take care of their loved ones.
I am confident that PO and PSL will restore the necessary foundations of a healthy democracy: rule of law, independent judiciary and free media. Most importantly, they will ensure that Poland regains its place as a strong partner with a decisive voice at European level. Their electoral success is crucial to preserving a democratic and prosperous Poland, at the heart of the EU. I wish the best of luck to PO and PSL.”
