Afghanistan, Belarus, Armenia top EPP Political Assembly agenda

07. September 2021
The European People’s Party (EPP) Political Assembly (PA) met in a hybrid format in Brussels on 6 and 7 September to update on political developments across member states, adopt a position paper on Afghanistan with a focus on Afghan women and discuss the situation in Belarus and Armenia. The adopted resolution strongly condemns the increase in violence in Afghanistan and atrocities committed by the Taliban towards the population and called upon the European Commission and EU Member States to increase cooperation and support for Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries so that refugees, particularly women, can be protected close to their home country. The resolution also calls for EU countries to protect those Afghani citizens who are most in danger of Taliban reprisals. The members of the Political Assembly discussed the ongoing situation at Lithuania’s border with Belarus. Delegates were strongly critical of the Lukashenko regime’s exploitation of vulnerable migrants as a hybrid weapon to undermine the security of Lithuania and the European Union as a whole. The EPP PA delegates also condemned the unfair closed-door trial of Maria Kolesnikova and Maxim Znak, who were imprisoned by the Lukashenko regime in a blatant violation of their human rights. Delegates called for their immediate release and reiterated their support for the opposition’s constant struggle to build a free and democratic future for their country. EPP Political Assembly was informed about the current situation with Armenian prisoners of war in Azerbaijan, who are still detained in violation of the Trilateral Statement of November 9 and international humanitarian law. The necessity for renewed efforts from the European institutions to fulfil the proper and unconditional release of Prisoners of War was stressed. The EPP delegates were updated on the preparations for the next Congress taking place on 17 and 18 November in Rotterdam. The Political Assembly wished the best of luck to EPP candidates and member parties in Morocco, Norway and Germany ahead of upcoming elections.
