EPP Home Affairs and Migration Ministers, chaired by European Commission Vice President Margaritis SCHINAS, gathered last evening, 27 September, in Brussels ahead of the Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) taking place today. The EPP ministers discussed the extension of temporary protection for those who fled from Ukraine after the start of the war. This protection was initially granted for one year and has already been extended until 4 March 2024. The European Commission proposal is to extend it for another year, until 4 March 2025. Furthermore, ministers reflected on the state-of-play of ongoing discussions regarding the negotiation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. They also exchanged views on the external dimension of migration. They focused on the need to enhance cooperation with third partners to manage increased migratory pressures, especially in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean.
