As Romania approaches the decisive second round of the presidential elections this Sunday, the stakes for Romanians and Europe as a whole could not be higher. The choice is clear: a future of unity, democracy, and progress with the pro-European candidate or a regression into division and foreign interference with the pro-Russian, anti-European candidate. In recent weeks, we have seen clear signs of disinformation and foreign interference in Romania’s elections, tactics all too familiar across Europe. Russian propaganda and manipulation pose a serious threat to our democracies. These attacks undermine trust, fuel extremism, and aim to destabilize our Union. We must not allow populism or extremism to derail Romania’s future. The pro-European path is one of prosperity and progress, and it reflects the shared values that unite us as Europeans. The European People's Party fully supports the call of the National Liberal Party for the creation of a pro-European political majority, one that unites all democratic forces in Romania against extremism and populism; a majority that is united in supporting the pro-European candidate in the presidential elections, Elena Lasconi. We also support the reform agenda put forward by the National Liberal Party, an agenda which is focused on real solutions: driving economic development, attracting investment, reducing waste in public spending, and reforming public administration. These are the foundations of a stronger Romania within the European family. We call on all Romanian citizens to stand together this Sunday for democracy and for Europe. The European People’s Party stands firmly with the Romanian people.   Manfred Weber President of the European People’s Party   Translation of the statement in Romanian language can be found here.
